Life Story for Theodore "Ted" Mullins

Theodore  "Ted"  Mullins
Theodore (Ted) Mullins was the 2nd Child of 7 children born in Lula, MS, On October 9 1945 to the union of the late Starling Sr. and Bernice Mullins. Ted received his education in the Mississippi School district.
Theodore who is affectionately known as Ted, Theo, or Sprat accepted Christ at an early age in Mississippi and later became a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish and St. Eulalia Parish.
After moving to Chicago Ted was drafted into the US Army, completed a tour of duty in Vietnam and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant E5. Afterwards Ted attended automotive engineering school in Denver, Co where he finished at the top of his class. He was employed by Automatic Electric.
Ted later enrolled at Malcolm X College and participated in a variety of trades, including Ryder Truck Driving School, where upon completion he was hired by United Parcel Service and retired after 30 years of employment. During those 30 years he helped many people obtain employment. He received the Circle of Honor from UPS for successfully driving 25 years without being involved in any accidents.
Ted started various businesses, including a community grocery store, parking lot sweeping service, and property rental. He employed family members and friends to work part-time as they attended school and cared for families.
Ted was president of the Teamsters National Black Caucasus-Chicago Chapter for many years. He served consecutive president terms until eventually retiring from the position. A scholarship was named in his honor. Ted still serves as the Honorary Executive Director of the TNBC-Chicago Chapter until his death.
Ted was a pillar for the Westside communities of Chicago because of his ambitious ways of meeting various needs. In 2009, Ted was invited to President Barack H. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s inauguration for his dedication and support of the 2008 campaign for presidency. Ted was also politically active with campaigns for Danny Davis, LaShawn Ford, Jesse White, Todd Stroger, John Stroger and Ed Smith.
Additional volunteerism includes assisting Nuns with building projects in Louisiana to help Katrina victims, helping St. Gall Parish build a playground in Chicago, helping at the Chicago Food Depository and serving in the soup kitchen at St. Eulalia Parish.
Ted departed his earthly life on Sunday, April 29th 2018, his sister Martha Jean Mullins preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy a beautiful wife of 19 years Martha Mullins. Three sons Marvin Sallis, Keith (Valentina) Sallis, Kendrick (Nina) Sallis, Ten Grandchildren, Two Great-Grandchildren. Three Sister, Helen (Willie) Harvey, Myrtle “Chic” Mullins, Janie Mullins. Two Brothers, Starling Mullins Jr., Lawrence (Barbara) Mullins. Two Sister-in-Laws, Earnestine Young and Ethel (Rodney) Avant. One aunt, Lela Betts. A host of Nieces, Nephews and other relatives. Two special friends, Les King and Ralph Hinton and his St. Eulalia Parish Community.
