Obituary for Marvin Edwards

Marvin Edwards, affectionately known as “Dirt”, was the eighth of twelve children from the union of Samuel and Lena Edwards of Lula, Mississippi. He was born on November 7, 1956. Marvin Edwards was preceded in death by his parents and four of his siblings: Michael, Dorothy, Howard, and Clarence.
Marvin received a public education in Tunica County, Mississippi and graduated from Rosa Fort High School in 1974. Growing up in the country, however, provided him with an education that lasted a lifetime: Learning how to work with his hands repairing anything and everything that was broken.
At less than 500 square miles, Tunica County in the Mississippi Delta, did not provide Marvin with enough of a view of the world. Shortly after graduating from high school he joined the Army and served in a number of locations including a tour of duty in Germany.
Having seen what was out beyond the confines of Tunica County, Marvin re-located to Chicago, Illinois after his discharge from the Army.
Dirt was an exceptional craftsman and the working life he pursued reflected that-as a lineman for the Union Pacific/Metra Railroad and as an electrostatic painter for the Axel Painting Company. He was skilled in automotive and electrical repairs; he was an accomplished carpenter and plumber. Eventually he went into business for himself.
Marvin Edwards was baptized at the Monroe Street Church of Christ under the leadership of Brother Luis Lugo.
In 1998, at the age of forty-four, Dirt met his soul mate Sandra Sullivan.
Sandra and Marvin were married on October 14, 2009 in Dearborn, Michigan and lived for the next four years in Chicago, Illinois.
To see them together could convince even the most unromantic among us that here were two people who were made for each other. Their love for each other and commitment to one another was easy to see.
Sandra’s “sweet thang” passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the age of fifty-seven.
Marvin Edwards passing leaves a void in the lives of those he left behind: his wife Sandra; his son Mark Cotton (Atlanta, Georgia); step-daughters Quanice Hassan (Addison, Illinois), Quawana Hassan (Bolingbrook, Illinois), and Shandell Hassan (Waldorf, Maryland).
He leaves behind eight grandchildren: Morgan, Nijee, Kaharee, Tyrell Jr., Nakia, Alannah, Kyana, and Iyana.
Marvin Edwards passing will be mourned by his five sisters and two brothers: Mary McHenry, Lois Edwards, Christine (James) Conway, Pauline (Samuel) Johnson, Marilyn (Ali) Hassan, Wayne Edwards (Bridgette), and Troy Edwards. All reside in Chicago, Illinois with the exception of his twin sister Marilyn who lives in Seattle, Washington.
His two sisters-in-law, Annette and Yvette of Atlanta, Georgia, along with scores of relatives and friends will never forget a man who spent too little time in this world making it a better place for those who had the good fortune to know and love him.
The best way to describe Marvin “Dirt” Edwards was as a man of compassion: he loved his family deeply and completely; his love for Sandra was unconditional and unwavering (even when he wanted to stab her in the eye). His smile could light up a room and his zest for life shone through to the very last moment on this earth.
For those of us who knew and loved him, his passing makes the world a more diminished place to be.
God’s Speed, Dirt…
